Millions of people of all over the world don’t imagine the beginning of working day without this drink. They necessarily drink one-another cup of coffee being on a business meeting, after it, in the evening, retiring with a cigar and cognac…
Annals mention coffee for the first time in 575 year. For some men coffee-drinking became the business daily, other have created the real coffee cult, with its own ceremonies, sacraments and initiations…
The true gourmet drinks to fifty cups of black as night coffee without cream during a day. You must spend not less than a half of an hour for preparation of this noble drink and, perhaps, the most fascinating stage is a bean’s grinding.
Hundred years ago, long before coffee became known in Europe, Arabs used mortars and pestles for bean’s crushing. Only the skilled master of coffee business could reach a high grinding quality. For this reason it is considered that for simplicity of an invigorating drink preparation Arabs have invented a wonderful coffee grinder, the mechanical device with rotating handle.
Coffee grinders were made of beech, nut, oak, sometimes mahogany. Firm breeds of these trees have no smell; therefore they are ideal for whimsical coffee beans storage. Coffee grinders were never stuck together, masters used only natural tools: wood pitch, plugs made of tree – for assemblage of the man-made device skeleton. Coffee grinder’s sides have absorbed a smell of the crushed coffee potion, because they roughness was never processed. And when the coffee grinder was ready, it was covered with a special varnish. Then master has waited for some hours and device was ready to work.
Modern manual coffee grinders differ from those which have appeared in XV century only a little. Beans are filled through a funnel between two corrugated metal disks one of which is rigidly fixed, and another is rotated by the same handle which turns the screw at coffee filling. The most typical coffee grinders have the form of a box with small opened drawer in which ground coffee is poured. Manual coffee grinders have two ways of bean’s crunching: with the help of knifes or by millstone’s disks. Mill grinder makes a better grinding, than a coffee grinder with knifes. The most perfect and volume on the sizes models can be attached to a wall, they are more capacious and more convenient in use. Qualitative coffee grinders have the special screw regulating a grinding degree.
The biggest manual coffee grinder in the world is in England; its height is about five meters. If you will fill it with beans and crush them, you could give to drink with coffee all London and its vicinities.
